Homage To Emily.jpg

Homage to Emily

36" x 36" Oil on Canvas

Now at ADC Fine Art Cincinnati

Emily Mason, wife of the late Wolf Kahn, was a master colorist. Using little tin cans saved from cat food, she thinned and poured paint across her canvases. The results are stunning. I used her method here and created layers of warm colors.

Lullaby on Broadway
48" x 30" Oil & Cold Wax  on Canvas

Now at ADC Fine Art, Cincinnati

New York is so busy. Trucks, buses, cars, and people all look for their place amid the movement. Somehow it all works. In this painting I capture my impression of the motion, each element working in their own space.

Reflections 101.jpg

Reflections 101
24" x 48" Oil, Cold Wax  & Collage on Canvas

Finalist, Bold Abstracts Exhibition, Camelback Gallery

As a medium to mix with paint, cold wax gives depth and texture that is difficult to achieve any other way. This painting gives rise to texture, movement, and a range of grays, both warm and cool. I find authority in this strong work.

Chromatic Drift.jpeg

Chromatic Drift
16" x 20" Oil & Mixed Media on Canvas

Sometimes colors and designs announce themselves. I am just the instrument through which they flow. I admit to loving the end result of this painting.

Geometry of Light, 20 x 20_.jpg

Geometry of Light
20" x 20" Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

I relate to the strength of various parts that fit together. After all, that is who we are--parts that work in conjunction with each other to create a whole being.

Geometry of Light
20" x 20" Oil & Mixed Media on Canvas

This painting reminds me that disparate pieces can come together in a powerful way.

Emanating Justice.jpeg

Emanating Justice
36" x 36" Oil & Mixed Media on Canvas

In times when life seems shaky, I remember a strong foundation supports unevenness. The heart of justice shares rays of hope and a way up.

Kinetic Core.jpeg

Kinetic Energy
30" x 3o" Oil & Mixed Media on Canvas

This highly textural painting brings together abstract elements with its own internal strength.

Glorious.jpeg

Glorious

12" x 12" Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

Dark green, red mauve and orange give the feeling of moving back imto an autumn hillside or dramatic sunset.  This painting suggests strength.

Rhythms.jpeg

Rhythms
12" x 12" Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

Abstract oil painting on board with orange, dark purple, with an undefined opening that carries viewer into the painting. Highly textural. This small painting has colorful abstract elements and suggest a mystery ahead.

Marion Kahn Rhapsody in Blue oil on canvas 36 x 36.jpg

Rhapsody in Blue
36" x 36" Oil on Canvas

Painted from George Gershwin's music

When I listen to the familiar opening of Rhapsody in Blue, the clarinet glissando moves me up, as does the low angular line moving from the bottom left up. All the city sounds, clacking of high heels, walking up and down stairs, large flowing expressions and piano keys are reflected here. At the end I added 3 gold lines to suggest that the angular line is a piano lid and the 3 gold lines are piano strings....

PS We just heard a magnificent rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue" at Strings Music Festival. The musicians played with devotion. The musicians played with such feeling that Vic and I had to hold back tears during the long, standing ovation.

Spring Training.jpg

Spring Training
36" x 36"  Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

I'm motivated by growth, both in myself and in the outside world. This painting began as a skyscape with only a blue sky and two roughed-in cherry branches. It didn't work as I had visualized, so  I turned it to the wall for two years.
When I looked at it again, I saw all that it could be and with botanic life emulating human life as we search for the best in ourselves.

Freedom
As seen on the Times Square Jumbotron, Summer 2023

Oil on Canvas. 60" x 36"

Few things suggest unfettered joy as much as childhood memories of swinging high and even higher! I felt that excitement
as I painted this painting.

Seeking Justice_edited.jpg

Seeking Justice
20" x 20" Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

In times of uncertainty, we look for truth and understanding. The search for justice can seem to be behind vaulted doors.
Where is "...with liberty and justice for all"?

Seeking Justice II.jpg

Seeking Justice II
20" x 20" Oil, Collage & Cold Wax on Canvas

Amidst confusion and in a chaotic, rapidly changing world, we search for truth, fairness, and meaning. Sometimes my subconscious takes over on the canvas and elucidates the message that my conscious mind might overlook.

Mysteries Unsolved.jpg

Mysteries Unsolved
30" x 30" Oil & Oil Sticks on Canvas

I found a vortex in this painting that is both strong and warm. The rich browns take me down to the yellow and burnt orange.  The horizontal lines connect the two cliff-like structures while the angular lines take me up to the blues. This is one of those paintings that mysteriously expressed its own voice.

Contemplay.jpg

Contemplay
36" x 36" Oil on Canvas

Emily Mason, wife of Wolf Kahn (both now deceased), created marvelous paintings by mixing irresistible paint colors, which she would thin and pour from little cat food tins. Her results are mesmerizing. In her honor, I used her technique to create this painting. I really like this painting, but I like her paintings even more. Now you understand the title--I'm thinking about Emily and playing with her technique.

Floating.jpg

Floating
24" x 48" Oil & Cold Wax on Canvas

This painting started as a horizontal cityscape. But cold wax is not a good medium for detail. Instead of calling it quits, I rotated the canvas 90 degrees, removed recognizable images, and created these lotus-like floaters. The orange on the left grounds me while the floating fantasies carry me up.

nighwatch over the village.jpg

Nightwatch Over the Village
48" x 48" Oil on Canvas

Even in darkness, there is warmth and motion. Do you see a hillside or neighborhoods  or movement?  I do. This mix of deeper hues suggests the mystery I find in evenings.

Muddy Pass III
24" x 48" Mixed Media on Canvas

This exuberant painting brings me great joy.
Artistic license allowed me to see a fall scene with colorful trees and water reflecting an intense turquoise sky light.

On Grief

The Space in Between. III: Music
36" x 36". Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas
Magazine Cover for Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide

If you've ever lost someone out of season, you, too, will relate to the desire to connect with them. But how can we get from this realm to that one? The desire to reach a loved one who had passed motivated this painting. Of course, that's not possible. There is something between here and there. It divides us, that space in between. But that space is alive and permeable. The pink collage bird was only an undefined shape until I pulled the right edge. Then, the shape became a bird. Some philosophies believe that birds have the mystical ability to move between realms. Now I see birds in most of my paintings, but I have never painted a bird.

the space in between II.jpg

The Space in Between. II: Forest
20" x 60". Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas

This painting is the second in my Space in Between series. It investigates the same mysterious craving to reach from this world to the next one. The space in between seems permeable, but if it is, it's very difficult to pass through it.
